Engagement Sessions should be… more
If you think about it… What’s the point of an engagement session? Most couples think it’s to grab some portraits for their save the dates (which itself isn’t a bad thing). Other couples simply think this is what they’re suppose to do. Often times they are just “following the crowd” and they think engagement sessions are just another check they can check off their wedding experience checklist.
What if engagement sessions could be more? What if you could lift off in a hot air balloon engagement session & not only get great portraits, but create an experience of a lifetime for you and your fiance!
The one question I ask every ALP couple
Think about the things you love to do with your fiance. What hobbies do you both share? How do you guys like to spend your time together? If someone was to write a screenplay of your story so far together – are there any themes that really stick out in the story? Have there been any important or significant moments or experiences that stick out in your mind?
That’s what we should do for the engagement session. No joking! I’ve photographed couples connecting in (nearly) every way possible. We’ve done sessions climbing mountains, canoeing in rivers, eating ice cream, attending rock concerts. We’ve even documented a couple brewing their favorite coffee, grabbing a seat on their couch under the blanket & streaming Stranger Things on Netflix.
In every one of these cases the essence of the session was to get to the heart of who they were as a couple. To document not just what they look like, but who they were as individuals and a couple looking to spend the rest of their life together.
Blair & Blake – an adventure for an adventurous couple
Enter Blair & Blake. I knew instantly they were a quintessential ALP couple. In our discover meeting they mentioned how the first time they flew in an airplane they actually jumped out of it.
Seriously. They jumped out of it! Their skydiving trip was the first time they had ever been in a plane. Like, WHAT?!?
It couldn’t be more clear that the story of Blair & Blake is one of adventure. One of seeking to push each other to experience life to its fullest. Neither one is what I would consider a “thrill junkie”. Blair & Blake couldn’t be more down to earth! They just can’t seem to want to stay on it!
When considering engagement sessions we dove into their sense of adventure & looked straight to the clouds.
Love at 3,000 feet
Luckily, Blair was able to direct us to the Asheville Balloon Company. Scheduling a hot air balloon engagement session isn’t for the feint of heart! We had no idea the trip would be postponed so many times due to weather. Apparently, conditions have to basically be perfect in order to fly safely. After many disappointing postponements the morning finally came to have our engagement session!
It’s hard to put into words how amazing it felt to lift off the ground. To float through the air. Oddly, It was both calm & exhilarating – and by far one of the coolest experiences of my life.
I can’t wait to go back with more couples and do this again! Thank you so much Blair & Blake for being the amazing humans you are! We can’t wait to continue documenting your story during your wedding day this year!
